Century Health and Leading Steatotic Liver Disease Researcher Collaborate to Build First-of-its-Kind AI-Powered Research Database
NEW YORK, April 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Century Health, a pioneer in applying AI to real-world clinical data to accelerate research, announced a collaboration with Juan Pablo (JP) Arab, M.D., Director of Alcohol Sciences at the Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Disease and Metabolic Health at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine, to build first-of-its-kind AI-powered clinical research database focused on steatotic liver disease (SLD). Developed under VCU's institutional research oversight, the database is intended to serve as an ongoing resource for clinical and translational research.
Steatotic liver disease encompasses a spectrum of conditions, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). In recent years, SLD has become one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease and liver transplantation worldwide. While significant advances have been made in characterizing disease biology, important gaps remain in understanding how the disease progresses in the real world, associated risks, and long-term clinical outcomes.
The database will enable longitudinal analyses across tens of thousands of records, allowing investigators to examine disease characterization, progression patterns, and clinically meaningful outcomes aligned with research priorities. This comprehensive and extensible data resource will support ongoing and future analyses, publications, and scientific collaborations, including helping to inform the design and evaluation of future therapeutic strategies.
"Steatotic liver disease is one of the most prevalent chronic liver conditions worldwide, with substantial clinical and public health impact," said Juan Pablo Arab, M.D., Director of Alcohol Sciences at the Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Disease and Metabolic Health. "By combining longitudinal clinical data with advanced analytics, our work with Century Health will create a powerful foundation for understanding disease progression at scale and for addressing some of the most important unanswered questions in SLD research."
Century Health's AI-powered platform will be used to automate the extraction and structuring of both structured and unstructured clinical data from electronic health records. Century Health applies advanced natural language processing and machine learning techniques to curate longitudinal clinical variables at scale, significantly reducing reliance on manual chart review while maintaining data quality and consistency. This approach enables high-resolution analyses of real-world disease trajectories that are increasingly important for translational research and therapeutic development.
"Many of the most important advances in liver disease come from understanding how patients progress over time in real-world clinical settings," said Vish Srivastava, Co-Founder and CEO of Century Health. "This collaboration with Dr. Arab will set a foundation to enable critical research that can generate evidence to shape future patient care and therapeutic innovation."
The database will initially support analyses related to liver fibrosis, non-invasive biomarkers, alcohol exposure patterns, and major clinical outcomes, with the flexibility to expand as additional variables and research questions are introduced over time. Insights generated from the database are expected to inform future research directions, support evidence generation relevant to emerging treatments, and advance understanding across the steatotic liver disease spectrum.
