The Character.AI lawsuit was filed on Thursday, August 13, 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and named Character Technologies, Google, and Character.AI’s co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas as defendants. Character.AI uses artificial intelligence to create virtual characters that simulate human conversation. The complaint alleges that these features can contribute to:
“The harm Character.AI has caused to children is profound and can have lasting consequences,” said Gibbs Mura partner Steve Lopez. “Families should know that they have options to hold these companies accountable, and they aren’t alone in their experiences.”
“AI technology may be evolving rapidly, but the responsibility to protect children is not new,” said Gibbs Mura partner Michael Weinkowitz. “Companies that create emotionally persuasive products to capture and hold children’s attention must build in meaningful safeguards—and they must be held accountable when they fail to do so.”
