For Qamar, the path to entrepreneurship began long before she entered the executive ranks of biotechnology.
Born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, she moved to the United States with limited financial resources and the goal of establishing a career in medicine. As the eldest child in a single-parent household, she learned early about responsibility, perseverance and the importance of creating opportunities through education and professional growth.
After arriving in the United States, Qamar began building her career from the ground up. Her professional journey eventually included clinical research associated with institutions such as Yale University, Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania, followed by work across pharmaceutical and biotechnology organizations.
Her experience has included clinical development, clinical operations, medical and scientific strategy, safety, pharmacovigilance and biometrics. She has also worked across therapeutic areas including gene and cell therapies, vaccines, neurology, ophthalmology and rare diseases.
Qamar later advanced into senior biotechnology leadership, most recently serving as Chief Medical Officer at Ocugen, where her responsibilities included clinical development and contributing to the company's clinical strategy.
While her career has included increasingly senior roles, Qamar says some of its most defining moments came from navigating uncertainty. Building a life in a new country required adapting to unfamiliar systems, financial pressures and the complexities of establishing herself professionally. She also faced the realities of advancing as a woman in industries where senior leadership has historically been male dominated.
Her experience in clinical research taught her that adaptability is equally important in science and business.

Qamar also believes her immigrant experience has influenced the way she approaches risk and new opportunities. Starting over in the United States taught her to become comfortable operating without a predetermined roadmap and to view setbacks as part of professional growth.
