Herd AI Introduces Herd OWN, the Third Option for Technology Ownership in the AI Era Instead of buying software seats or building in-house, companies get the Herd platform, AI-native development and the team to run it under one retainer tied to an outcome they choose

ATLANTA, Nov. 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Herd AI, Inc. ( https://getherd.ai), maker of the Herd AI-native work platform, today introduced Herd OWN, a third option for technology ownership in the AI era. Companies have long had two choices: buy software licenses or build it themselves. Herd OWN combines software, implementation and consulting in one monthly retainer with no per-user licenses. Each engagement starts with a defined outcome, an accountable owner and a measured baseline.

Both of the usual options are under strain. On the buy side, Zylo's 2026 SaaS Management Index found that 61% of IT leaders it surveyed were forced to cut projects due to unplanned SaaS cost increases. On the build side, MIT's Project NANDA found that 95% of organizations in its research saw no measurable return from generative AI, and Gartner predicts more than 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027.

Herd OWN replaces both with a repeatable, shared model: Herd builds common capabilities once as tested components and uses AI-native development only for what is unique to each client. Herd estimates its six core components would take a typical company 200 to 274 team-weeks to build in-house.

"For thirty years, companies had two choices: buy software that renews whether it works or not, or build it themselves and hope it ships," said Keith Felker, chief revenue officer of Herd AI. "AI has made building cheap, so now everyone is paying to rebuild the same things. Herd OWN is the third option, and we believe it's the best one. We reuse what's common, build what's different and tie the whole retainer to an outcome the client chose. If the number doesn't move, we haven't done our job."

Reuse matters beyond the budget. The International Energy Agency projects data-center electricity use will more than double to about 945 terawatt-hours by 2030. Under its "Reuse is the new renewable" commitment, Herd shares each component across clients and ships one upgrade to everyone. Clients running at least three Herd components in production earn its Built on Reuse badge, reviewed yearly. Herd does not claim measured environmental reductions.

Herd treats responsible AI as part of the build. Each component declares its inputs, events and permissions in a manifest that is checked before go-live, and workflows include approval gates, execution audit logs and per-step cost tracking.

A Herd OWN retainer includes four platform products and the people to run them. Herd: Work turns signals from email, meetings, CRM and tickets into ranked actions. Herd: Data provides account and market intelligence. Herd: CMS runs websites, content and campaign attribution. Herd: IDP provides single sign-on and governed agent access. Herd supports Model Context Protocol servers and models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Perplexity.

Engagements begin with Your first workflow, a proof of concept on one recurring process. Retainers come in three published tiers starting at $10,000 per month, and Herd's next five Herd OWN clients will receive 25% off and join its platform ambassador program. Herd's social impact commitment is at https://getherd.ai/social-impact/.
