TELUS Reports Third Quarter 2026 Results, Demonstrates Continued Discipline in Core Telecom; Advances Transformation Strategy
VANCOUVER, BC, Nov. 6, 2026 /CNW/ -- TELUS Corporation (TSX: T) (NYSE: TU) today released its unaudited results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026. The Company is advancing a comprehensive Transformation Strategy to fund debt reduction and growth investment in core telecom and AI infrastructure.
Third quarter 2026 highlights
"Since our second quarter earnings call, our core telecom business has shown clear signs of stabilization and we have made important progress on the execution of our Transformation Strategy," said Victor Dodig, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Our strategy has one clear objective: returning TELUS to a leading communications and AI infrastructure player in Canada. We've identified specific levers to structurally transform TELUS, and we're moving with clarity and urgency to strengthen our financial foundation, hone our operational discipline and control costs, and deploy resources to drive profitable and sustainable growth and returns."
"To this end, we are launching a multi-year efficiency program targeting approximately $900 million in annualized cash savings exiting 2028, which will support balance sheet deleveraging and sustainable profitability for the long term. I am confident that our Transformation Strategy will establish TELUS as a leaner, more focused business better positioned to deliver sustainable, profitable growth and long-term shareholder value," concluded Mr. Dodig.
"Our third quarter results are in line with the expectations we set in July, and we are reaffirming our full-year 2026 annual targets," said Gopi Chande, Chief Financial Officer. "The efficiency program we announced today is expected to structurally improve our earnings power and free cash flow, giving us the flexibility to reduce debt while continuing to invest in the business. Together with the dividend reset, and removal of the DRIP discount that we announced in July, coupled with our active asset monetization program, our plan creates a clear path to achieving our net debt to Adjusted EBITDA leverage target of 3.0-times or lower by year-end 2028."
Transformation Strategy Progress
In July 2026, TELUS announced a comprehensive Transformation Strategy designed to structurally improve earnings and free cash flow while strengthening its balance sheet. The program is underpinned by three operational and financial priorities: 1) strengthen our financial foundation; 2) hone our operational discipline and control costs; and 3) deploy resources to drive profitable and sustained growth and returns.
The Transformation Strategy balances near-term cash generation with long-term growth investments, positioning TELUS to achieve a leverage ratio of 3.0-times or lower by year-end 2028, while maintaining investment-grade credit ratings and supporting sustainable profitability.
Today, TELUS is announcing several Transformation Strategy updates: collectively, these efforts are focused on reducing debt and interest costs, strengthening our balance sheet, and supporting profitable growth in the long term.
Strengthen our financial foundation
TELUS is advancing its assessment of the Global Platform Businesses portfolio to unlock value from the monetization of non-core assets. Within this portfolio, TELUS' near-term priority is on TELUS Health and TELUS Agriculture & Consumer Goods.
Hone our operational discipline and control costs
TELUS launched an efficiency program targeting annualized cash savings of approximately $900 million exiting 2028. The multi-year program will be driven by operational cost and margin improvements, and capital efficiency. Approximately 80 per cent of the cash savings will come from core Telecom and the balance from Global Platform Businesses. In Telecom, the program focuses on improving customer care, customer growth and improving revenue per product, optimizing the channel experience between physical and digital, procurement optimization, and network and field force efficiency.
Deploy resources to drive profitable, sustained growth and returns
Strategically investing in organic growth in core Telecom assets in Canada, including continuing to expand its PureFibre network, into high-return, underserved markets in urban and suburban communities where it can quickly drive strong penetration gains and product intensity. TELUS' PureFibre network is a highly valuable asset and a critical differentiator across its business. It strengthens its competitive position in the markets it serves and AI infrastructure more broadly. It is also the foundation for meeting one of the fastest-growing sources of demand in the economy: AI infrastructure.
TELUS is positioning itself as a leader in Canada's emerging AI infrastructure market by leveraging its PureFibre network to provide connectivity solutions to purpose-built data centres not owned by TELUS, and is building sovereign AI capabilities for Canadian businesses and government. These two initiatives are near-term priorities, while the Company is exploring a third initiative in data centre shells with already secured power. This opportunity will be through partnerships, as TELUS will deploy capital with discipline while balancing its commitments to balance sheet deleveraging and free cash flow growth.

Third quarter 2026 financial results overview
Consolidated operating revenues and other income were $5.0 billion, compared with $5.1 billion in the prior year, reflecting lower other income, a consolidated service revenue decline of 1 per cent, as well as lower equipment revenue. Consolidated service revenue declined as growth in our core telecom business, including mobile network and fixed data services revenue, was offset by TELUS Digital. See 'Third quarter 2026 operating highlights' within this news release for a discussion on TELUS' reportable segment results for TTech, TELUS Health and TELUS Digital.
In the quarter, TELUS recognized a non-cash impairment of $800 million relating to TELUS Health, as the recoverable amount of the TELUS Health cash-generating unit was less than its carrying amount as at September 30, 2026. See Note 18(b) of the interim consolidated financial statements for additional details.
TELUS recognized a net loss of $660 million and a basic loss per share of $0.42, reflecting the after-tax impacts of a decline in Operating income and greater Financing costs. When excluding certain costs and other adjustments (see 'Reconciliation of adjusted Net income' in this news release), compared to the same period last year, adjusted Net income of $251 million decreased by 32 per cent, while adjusted basic EPS of $0.16 was down 33 per cent. Adjusted Net income is a non-GAAP financial measure and adjusted basic EPS is a non-GAAP ratio. For further explanation of these measures, see 'Non-GAAP and other specified financial measures' in this news release.
Compared to the same period last year, consolidated EBITDA decreased by 12 per cent to $1.5 billion. Adjusted EBITDA declined by 5 per cent to $1.8 billion reflecting TELUS Digital performance and the non-recurrence of real estate gains and other operating expense reductions recorded in the prior period. Excluding these one-time items, Adjusted EBITDA decreased by 2 per cent. See 'Third quarter 2026 operating highlights' within this news release for a discussion on segmented Adjusted EBITDA results.
TTech subscriber base of 18.3 million connections increased by 6 per cent over the past 12 months, with mobile phone subscribers up 1 per cent to 10.4 million, connected devices up 22 per cent to 5.1 million, and internet subscribers up 2 per cent to 2.8 million.
Cash provided by operating activities of $1.5 billion decreased by 1 per cent. Free cash flow of $396 million decreased by 35 per cent compared to the same period a year ago, largely driven by lower EBITDA and increased capital expenditures.
Consolidated capital expenditures of $701 million increased by 8 per cent in the third quarter of 2026. Capital expenditures in support of TTech operations of $619 million increased by $85 million, primarily from greater capital investments in developing new facilities and expanding network infrastructure builds to meet growing industry demand. TELUS Health capital expenditures of $52 million decreased by $4 million, largely driven by decreased investments in business acquisitions. TELUS Digital capital expenditures of $41 million remained largely unchanged.

The sum of active mobile phone subscribers, connected device subscribers and internet subscribers, measured at the end of the respective periods based on information in billing and other source systems. Effective January 1, 2026, with retrospective application to January 1, 2025, we have revised our subscriber reporting to apply a product-intensive focus on our core bundling foundation of mobility and internet and thus will no longer report TV, security and automation and residential voice subscribers. This change concentrates our disclosure on our core bundling foundation and enables us to better serve our customers, while supporting the migration from legacy products and services to integrated IP streaming, mobile-first connectivity, and smart home solutions. Effective January 1, 2026, we made certain subscriber adjustments on a prospective basis, reducing our subscriber base for mobile phones (18,000), connected devices (78,000) and internet (30,000). Non-GAAP and other specified financial measures
We issue guidance on and report certain non-GAAP measures that are used to evaluate the performance of TELUS, as well as to determine compliance with debt covenants and to manage our capital structure. As non-GAAP measures generally do not have standardized meanings, they might not be comparable to similar measures disclosed by other issuers. Securities regulations require that such measures be clearly defined, qualified and reconciled with their nearest GAAP measure. Certain of the metrics do not have generally accepted industry definitions.
Adjusted Net income and adjusted basic earnings per share (EPS): These are non-GAAP measures that do not have any standardized meanings prescribed by IFRS Accounting Standards and are therefore unlikely to be comparable to similar measures presented by other issuers. Adjusted Net income excludes the effects of restructuring and other costs, real estate rationalization-related restructuring impairments, income tax-related adjustments, long-term debt prepayment premium, and other adjustments (identified in the following tables). Adjusted basic EPS is calculated as adjusted Net income divided by the basic weighted-average number of Common Shares outstanding. These measures are used to evaluate performance at a consolidated level and exclude items that, in management's view, may obscure underlying trends in business performance or items of an unusual nature that do not reflect our ongoing operations. They should not be considered as alternatives to Net income and basic EPS in measuring TELUS' performance.

EBITDA (earnings before interest, income taxes, depreciation and amortization): We issue guidance on and report EBITDA because it is a key measure used to evaluate performance at a consolidated level. EBITDA is commonly reported and widely used by investors and lending institutions as an indicator of a company's operating performance and ability to incur and service debt, and as a valuation metric. EBITDA should not be considered as an alternative to Net income in measuring TELUS' performance, nor should it be used as a measure of cash flow. EBITDA as calculated by TELUS is equivalent to Operating revenues and other income less the total of Goods and services purchased expense and Employee benefits expense.
We calculate Adjusted EBITDA by excluding items of an unusual nature that do not reflect our ongoing operations and should not, in our opinion, be considered in a long-term valuation metric or should not be included in an assessment of our ability to service or incur debt.

Free cash flow: We report this measure as a supplementary indicator of our operating performance, and there is no generally accepted industry definition of free cash flow. It should not be considered as an alternative to the measures in the condensed interim consolidated statements of cash flows. Free cash flow excludes certain working capital changes (such as trade receivables and trade payables), proceeds from divested assets and other sources and uses of cash, as reported in the condensed interim consolidated statements of cash flows. It provides an indication of the amount of cash generated by operations that is available after capital expenditures and may be used for discretionary purposes, among other things, to pay dividends, repay debt, purchase shares or make other investments. Free cash flow may be supplemented from time to time by proceeds from divested assets or financing activities.
