Up to 2 Million Bitcoin Sit Idle Behind a 32% Tax Bill, Sypher Capital Finds

Up to 2 Million Bitcoin Sit Idle Behind a 32% Tax Bill, Sypher Capital Finds JERSEY CITY, N.J., Sept. 09, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- An estimated 1.5 to 2 million bitcoin bought below $5,000, on the order of $135 billion at current prices, sits idle because a sale would hand roughly 32% of the position to tax. That tranche is the largest pool of bitcoin not earning yield, according to The State of Bitcoin Yield 2026, a paper released today by Sypher Capital and BorrowOnBitcoin.

Bitcoin yield should not be judged by headline APY alone, the paper argues. Fit depends on the holder's cost basis, where the coins sit, and who pays the return: a borrower, an options seller, a token treasury, or the holder's own upside.

Bitcoin's Early Yield Engines Have Compressed

Behind that argument is a steep re-pricing across the strategies that once paid double digits:

Institutional bitcoin-income products have recently arrived. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA) began trading in June. Goldman Sachs agreed in August to acquire NEOS Investments, manager of a bitcoin covered-call ETF, for up to $2.25 billion. The paper treats that as a maturing market: when capital scales into a strategy, the spread tends to fall.

Six Bitcoin Holder Segments

For the sub-$5,000 cohort, yield is useful because it defers a taxable sale. ETF holders have little in-wrapper yield beyond lending of the shares themselves.

“Bitcoin yield is moving from a search for the highest rate to a search for the right rate,” said Steven Han, Partner of Sypher Capital. “What a product pays matters less than whether it fits the holder's basis, custody and the source of the return.”
